How Solar Panels Work

On average, a solar PV system can save between €200-300 per year on your domestic electric bill.

Photovoltaic (PV) devices generate electricity directly from sunlight via an electronic process that occurs naturally in certain types of material, called semiconductors. Electrons in these materials are freed by solar energy and can be induced to travel through an electrical circuit, powering electrical devices or sending electricity to the grid.

PV panels don’t need direct sunlight to work. And they still produce electricity on cloudy days. Solar Panels also have a long shelf life. As the only moving part in a solar panel are the electrons, a panel will normally last about 20 years.

Hot Water From Solar Thermal Collectors

solar thermal collector collects heat by absorbing sunlight

There are a range of technologies which transform the energy from the sun into hot water. In Ireland, the most common technologies are solar thermal collectors, or solar hot water collectors. These devices capture solar energy and transfer it to heat water.

The amount of water supplied by solar thermal collectors depends on the system size and building hot water demand. Typical well-installed systems provide up to 60% of hot water demand over 12 months.

Frequently Asked Questions

The installation process is not very disruptive. A domestic installation is normally completed in one day, with most of the work being done outside the house

Irish planning rules state that for more than 12 m² of ‘solar panels’ you need planning permission. We will help fit the panels to avoid any unwanted paperwork.

Yes.

We get around 60% of our energy from indirect sunlight and the remaining 40% comes from the sun’s direct rays.

So, despite the Irish water being somewhat cloudy, there is still enough sunlight to produce hot water and electricity for your home.

Provide us with your Eircode or GPS co-ordinates. From that, we can normally see the space available for modules and confirm the price.

We will then schedule and complete a survey of your home to plan the most efficient installation of your Solar system.
